4K streaming checklist: getting the picture you paid for

Six things that must all line up before 4K HDR streaming actually looks like 4K.

Your TV must support 4K and, ideally, the HDR formats your service uses.

Your streaming device must output 4K. Older sticks and some built-in TV apps are capped at 1080p.

Your HDMI cable and port matter. Use a High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable and the TV's HDMI input labelled for 4K/HDR, and turn on enhanced input mode in the TV settings if it's off.

Your plan must include 4K. Several services charge extra for it or limit 4K to specific events.

The content must be produced in 4K. Most live TV channels are still 720p or 1080i, with 4K reserved for select sports and films.

Your connection needs about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth. If any one of these is missing, you'll get HD instead.
