Choosing a streaming device: Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV
What separates the major streaming platforms, and which one suits your household.

Every major live TV service supports the big four platforms, so the choice comes down to interface, price and the ecosystem you already use.
Roku is platform-neutral and simple, with a search that shows results across many services. Amazon Fire TV is inexpensive and deeply tied to Prime Video and Alexa. Google TV, found on Chromecast and many smart TVs, recommends content across your apps. Apple TV 4K costs the most but is fast, ad-light and integrates with iPhone and Apple services.
For 4K HDR, check that both the device and your TV support the same formats. Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+ support differs by model.
Built-in smart TV apps are often fine, but cheaper TVs can have slow processors and stop getting app updates after a few years. A separate streaming stick is an easy upgrade.
Games consoles also run most streaming apps, though they draw more power and their remotes are less convenient for everyday TV.
