The cord-cutting checklist: leaving cable without regrets
A step-by-step plan for cancelling cable or satellite and rebuilding your TV lineup online.

Start by listing what you actually watch. Go through a normal week and write down the channels, shows and live events your household cares about. Most people use far fewer channels than their cable package includes.
Next, check your internet. A plan of 100 Mbps comfortably handles several simultaneous HD streams. If your broadband came bundled with TV, ask what the internet-only price will be, since bundle discounts sometimes vanish when you cancel.
Match your list to services. Use our comparison tool to see which live TV services carry your must-have channels, then look at free options and an over-the-air antenna for local stations.
Overlap your trial. Most paid live TV services offer a trial period or monthly billing with no contract. Run your chosen service alongside cable for a week before you cancel.
Finally, return equipment promptly and get a receipt. Unreturned cable boxes are the most common source of surprise charges after cancelling.
