What is a vMVPD? Live TV streaming explained

The industry term for services like YouTube TV and Sling, and how they differ from cable.

9/21/2026 · 3 min read

A vMVPD is a virtual multichannel video programming distributor. In plain English, it's a cable-style channel bundle delivered over the internet instead of a cable line.

YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, DIRECTV STREAM, Philo, Frndly TV and Vidgo are all vMVPDs. They license the same networks cable companies do and pay similar carriage fees, which is why prices have risen steadily.

The main advantages over cable are no contracts, no equipment rental, and an app that works on phones and TVs anywhere in your home country. Most include a cloud DVR.

The trade-offs: you need reliable broadband, some regional channels may be missing, and stream delay can put you a little behind a live broadcast.

vMVPDs differ most in their sports and local-channel coverage, so compare those first.
